Reflections on the 2022 Symposium
Sustain SC’s Inaugural Sustainability Symposium was an immersive, all-encompassing meeting of the minds centered around elevating South Carolina as the future of commerce and conservation. The one-day event brought sustainability leaders with South Carolina-based companies together with leaders from statewide government, conservation and business at Central Energy in Columbia.
The day began with welcoming remarks from Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann and kicked off with an interactive presentation from Sustain SC Immediate Past Chair Rob Howell, Senior Vice President and Shareholder of Avison Young. The morning sessions were dedicated to shared ideas, unique perspectives and first-hand experiences from leaders in commerce, economic development and corporate who are all on their own sustainability journey.
Google was the star of the afternoon. Governor Henry McMaster joined us to present Google with the Sustain SC 2022 Sustainability Leadership Award and launch the Sustain SC Land and Water Action Fund (LAWF). LAWF is a new conservation fund dedicated to protecting South Carolina’s precious natural resources. Google contributed the first donation to LAWF with a $500,000 grant, which will go toward permanently protecting a portion of Waites Island from development. That afternoon, Waccamaw Community Foundation announced a full match to Google’s grant.
The Sustainability Symposium was designed to forge new connections, spark new ideas, mark milestone moments and new beginnings for a more sustainable South Carolina.
